What is Injection Molding?

Injection molding is the process of injecting molten plastic or metal feedstock into a mold cavity, rapidly cooling it, then ejecting the solidified plastic part. It is the most widely used manufacturing process for plastic parts and the most affordable route to mass production.

Compared to other manufacturing methods like CNC machining or 3D printing, injection molding requires an upfront investment in tooling. However, once the mold is made, the cost per part drops significantly, especially in high-volume production. This makes injection molding a cost-effective solution for large-scale manufacturing.

Injection molding supports a wide variety of materials, including thermoplastics, thermosets, and even some metals. These materials can be easily combined with pigments and functional additives to customize both the appearance and performance of the final parts. Additionally, because the same mold is used throughout production, the process ensures high consistency and repeatability across every part.

Manufacturing Process Steps for Injection Molded Parts

Our custom injection molding service typically involves the following steps:

Part Design

Uploading the 3D CAD files and 2D drawings of the desired part. Our engineers will review the design for Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and offer feedback to optimize it for the molding process.

Tooling Fabricatio

The mold is crafted from steel or aluminum, ensuring precision and repeatability. After the mold is created, T1 samples are produced and shipped for your approval. Once approved, the remaining parts are manufactured.

Material Selection

We work with you to select the right material based on your requirements. Pigments and functional additives can be blended to achieve the desired appearance and performance.

Injection Molding

Heat the material until it melts, then inject it under high pressure into the mold cavity. The molten plastic flows into the mold and forms the part.

Cooling and Ejection

The part cools and solidifies inside the mold. Once ready, ejector pins release the part, and the mold closes to begin the next cycle.

Finishing and Quality Control

Parts may undergo trimming, surface finishing, or light assembly as needed. We inspect each part to ensure it meets your specifications.
